Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor has announced the further development of the visual aspect of the band's latest release, Ghosts I-IV. The plan: a "film festival" built around the album. Reznor has challenged fans to make a film to accompany a track from Ghosts that inspires them.
Reznor writes via his website, "This record began as an experiment with us using sound as a means to describe visuals. Early in the project we thought it would be interesting to see what the community could create / collaborate on as a reaction to the music we were making."
Reznor notes it isn't a contest to win elaborate prizes, but suggested several uses of the video. These include multiple online "film festivals," broadcast TV specials, or a one-time live performance of the entire Ghosts record with fan's visuals involved.
First, fans need to create the content before we see how the project develops. Trent's says the album is "meant to be an experiment in collaboration and a chance for us to interact beyond the typical one-way artist-to-fan relationship."
